Artificial Intelligence

Quick Read: As legislation and regulatory measures take shape around AI, the profession is uniquely situated to inform these policy measures utilizing the profession’s expertise and experience in safeguarding the public interest.

Issue: A collage of activities has emerged in AI across nations, states, localities, and the private sector. As lawmakers and regulators work to better understand and place guardrails around emerging technology like AI, it is vital that CPAs are engaged to ensure protections to the public interest are top of mind.

The profession’s business is trust. Future legislative and regulatory requirements may impact how the profession uses AI as part of workstreams and day-to-day activities. But, going beyond use, where legislation or regulation calls for testing or an audit-like process over AI systems, the profession is the leader in delivering assurance services. Calling upon decades of experience, CPAs can share their expertise and understanding with lawmakers and regulators as they seek policies that safeguard people, data, systems, and jobs.

As market participants encourage testing of AI systems, the common thread and the resulting theme is systems built on trust. Where the profession can place trust remains a key focus for the Association’s advocacy efforts on AI.
