Become a Federal Key Person

Aug 18, 2024 · 1 min read

The AICPA’s Federal Key Person Program works to maintain regular and continuing personal contact with each Member of Congress, by working with state CPA societies and volunteers to develop relationships with U.S. Representatives and Senators, and their staffs. The goal of the key person program is to be able to share the profession’s viewpoints on issues from a CPA constituent’s perspective, and to encourage action on specific legislative issues.

The AICPA Federal Key Person Program is a vitally important supplement to the efforts of the AICPA professional staff in Washington, D.C., because it brings the CPA profession’s viewpoint into focus through local CPA constituents and business leaders, and to complement the work of the AICPA’s professional legislative staff in Washington.

When timely contact and feedback are needed, the AICPA’s Congressional Affairs team reaches out to key persons (and state CPA societies) with information, including talking points and background materials.

Key Person Responsibilities

A federal key person’s responsibilities are:

  1. Regular personal contact with their assigned U.S. Senator and/or Representative, or their staff, to maintain and grow the constituent influencer relationship, and to position CPAs as thought leaders on business issues.

  2. Taking action to contact their Member of Congress when the AICPA or state CPA society reaches out via a "Legislative Action Alert" concerning a particular legislative issue.

  3. Promptly reporting back to the AICPA (and their state society) contact about the outreach to the elected official or their staff.

  4. When requested, attending political fundraising events for the AICPA Political Action Committee (AICPA PAC).

  5. Identifying additional CPAs who may also serve as federal key persons.
