The four-step pathway to the ABV credential

Step 1: Book the exam. The ABV exam has two parts — each with 90 multiple-choice questions. It’s offered year-round and you can sit for it at a test center or online in a remotely-proctored environment. You won’t have to sit for the ABV exam if you have passed the ASA (BV) exam, CFA exam level III or the CBV credential exam.

Step 2: Learn. Acquire specialized knowledge through self-study courses and live educational events. You must complete minimum of 75 hours of education in the ABV body of knowledge within five years of the ABV application.

Step 3: Gain experience. CPAs must complete 1,500 hours, and valuation professionals must complete 4,500 hours of valuation experience within five years of the ABV application.

Step 4: Get credentialed. Complete the ABV application, attest to meeting the education and experience requirements and pay the appropriate credential fee.
