Following the publication of the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy, Andrew Harding, FCMA, CGMA, Chief Executive – Management Accounting at The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, said:
“The UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy brings much-needed clarity around the government’s plan for business and growth but underplays the vital role SMEs play in the UK economy. Making the Industrial Strategy Council permanent is a strong signal of its commitment to addressing long-standing issues such as regional growth disparities, investment, skills development, and sluggish productivity. And while we welcome some positive steps for SMEs - such as improved access to finance and a new Business Growth Service – the strategy, as it stands, falls short in recognising the vital role SMEs play in the UK economy. We can only hope that they will receive the attention and support they deserve in the forthcoming SME Strategy."
