London – 8 September 2026: The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) welcomes the UK Government consultation to modernise the corporate reporting framework to better meet the needs of companies, investors and the wider economy.
Comprehensive corporate reporting, integrating financial and non-financial information, is an essential ingredient in telling the organisation’s story in a way that is transparent, rigorous and accessible, while instilling confidence and trust among stakeholders, including investors. This initiative is an opportunity to make UK reporting much more concise, connected and decision useful.
As the UK Government acknowledges, the current review of UK reporting requirements presents an important chance to assess whether our reporting requirements are still fit for purpose. UK corporate reports have grown steadily in length and complexity in recent years and while transparency remains essential more disclosures do not always mean greater insights.
Andrew Harding FCMA CGMA Chief Executive CIMA said: “It’s potentially the most significant shake up to the UK corporate reporting landscape in a generation. We’ve heard from many business leaders and our members that today’s regulatory and compliance burden is continually expanding and outweighing the benefits received by stakeholders. Corporate reporting should be transparent, decision-useful and efficient, evidencing value creation and not an ever-increasing regime of costly box ticking for organisations. It will be important to make sure reform is proportionate and useful if it is to be a contributor to the UK’s economic growth and international competitiveness”.
The UK reporting and accounting framework has not been substantially revised for some years and during this time there have been widespread developments internationally in the sustainable reporting arena. Most recently the introduction of sustainability-related financial disclosures UK SRS S1 and S2 have significantly enhanced the regulatory landscape. Similarly, the digital and AI-enabled environment have transformed how reporting works in practice. Stakeholders increasingly expect information to be accessible and timely. The Review’s success will therefore depend on organisations treating reporting as a catalyst for stronger governance, better board insight, and effective long-term decision-making.
CIMA has long championed globally consistent, decision-useful reporting that strengthens the quality of information available to boards, executives and investors. In our view more disclosures do not necessarily mean better information is available. Excessive volume can obscure insights that matter most for business leadership, strategic decision-making and long-term value creation. We therefore welcome the Government’s ambition to identify where reporting can be simplified, streamlined and better integrated into management thinking.
CIMA will be providing a written response to the consultation which closes on 30th November 2026.
