My career in accounting began during college, thanks to the guidance of some incredible mentors who steered me toward an accounting degree. They always emphasized how many doors accounting could open and what an exciting time it was to be in the field, even if they could not articulate what exactly made accounting exciting to a teenager at the time. Nonetheless, I took their advice, earned my CPA license, and started my career in audit at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) after college.

My time at PwC was invaluable. It was a great opportunity to meet and learn from so many new mentors and to tackle a wide range of projects. The dedicated team culture made it common to work across both big and small teams, which helped me learn and grow quickly. I was often thrown into challenging situations where I had to “figure it out.” This forced me to truly understand concepts instead of just memorizing the placement of debits and credits. I am grateful for my time at a Big Four CPA firm, as it shaped me into a more adaptable and confident professional.

Despite being involved in the accounting community, I realized I did not know much about forensic accounting, except for what I had seen in the movie The Accountant. After learning more about the field, I was sold. I joined Hemming Morse as a manager in their economic damages department about a year ago, and I could not be happier with the decision.

The work here is incredibly interesting, and the team culture I valued at PwC has carried over. My casework spans securities fraud investigations, shareholder disputes, lost profits, audit malpractice, and embezzlement projects, ensuring every day is different and intellectually stimulating. This variety allows me to represent Fortune 100 clients and work with our clients —from both the legal and business communities — to deliver value. I finally understand what my mentors meant about accounting opening many doors and being exciting.

I share my story to encourage aspiring accounting professionals to explore forensic accounting, a field further supported by the Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF®) credential from the AICPA. Having met the practical experience requirement for the CFF exam, I am excited to see how my firm's teachings align with the exam's concepts. My ongoing education aims to strengthen my role at Hemming Morse and within the forensic accounting community. I look forward to furthering my credentials and contributing to my clients' success.

As I progress in my career, I aspire to offer the same level of support to others that I have received from my mentors. I aim to demonstrate that accounting, specifically forensic accounting, with its diverse and unforeseen opportunities, can truly be a stimulating and rewarding profession.
