Entities that operate in the construction industry are often subject to contracts that contain retainage or retention provisions, which allow the customer to withhold a portion of the consideration billed by the entity until certain project milestones are met or the project is completed. This is known as conditional retainage. Many construction contracts call for retention by the owner of a specified amount of each progress billing, often ranging from 5% to 10%, until the job reaches an agreed-upon state
