An Executive Order (EO) issued March 25, 2025, requires that paper checks for federal disbursements cease by Sept. 30, 2025 and that payments sent to Treasury (including tax payments) should be processed electronically as soon as practicable to the extent permitted by law. The order directs the Treasury Secretary to cease issuing paper checks for all federal disbursements, including tax refunds, by Sept. 30, 2025, unless an exception applies for individuals who cannot access banking services or electronic payment systems.
