Benefits for organizations participating in the Youth Apprenticeship Program
With the shortage of candidates in accounting and finance, the Youth Apprenticeship Program is an ideal way to grow and develop local talent while exposing them to the vast opportunities available to accounting and finance professionals. The Youth Apprenticeship Program takes the time-tested earn-while-you-learn model to high school students to jumpstart their careers. With this program, eligible high school students work for an employer in their area and receive relevant instruction, learning business and finance essentials from the CGMA® Finance Leadership Program. Here are just a few of the benefits for organizations:

Increased community involvement
Give back by supporting youth and developing local talent.

Strengthened accounting pipeline
Show the next generation the wealth of opportunities in accounting and finance.

Assistance with entry-level tasks
Youth apprentices can help with entry-level tasks at your organization.

Expanded recruitment
Earlier access to the best and brightest students.

What does the Youth Apprenticeships in Maryland entail?
Apprentices work directly for your organization in an earn-while-you-learn model. There are four important components to the Youth Apprenticeship Program:
Related instructions and Digital Skill Certificate | Apprentices study the Business and Finance Foundational Level plus the Digital Finance Course of the Operational Level of the CGMA framework per the online CGMA Finance Leadership Program. Upon completion of the coursework, the apprentice will earn the Business and Finance Essentials certificate. |
Leadership academy | Maryland-based apprentices participate in the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants Student Leadership Academy, a two-day program that introduces them to the profession and allows them to network with students and professional accountants. |
Coaching | A youth apprenticeship coach will support apprentices with the Color Accounting Curriculum, a new way to learn and teach how accounting works. The curriculum rapidly delivers solid accounting literacy, which in turn supports powerful financial literacy and business acumen. |
On-the-job training | Instruction is combined with a tailored, on-the-job training program, which allows apprentices to put the competencies they’re learning to use in real time. Students work a minimum of 450 hours over the course of a summer or academic year for an approved employer who pays them at least minimum wage. Employers in Maryland are approved by the Maryland Department of Labor and the Maryland State Department of Education. |
