The majority of long-term care is provided by family and friends, including many of your clients, and it places a significant burden on them. Unfortunately, most families don’t plan for the logistics of caregiving in advance, leading to costly and reactive decisions.

In this session, Dr. Carolyn McClanahan will share her process for advance caregiving planning and what to do once a caregiving need arises.

She will discuss defining care goals, including helping families with advanced directive decisions, and offer resources for planning and paying for care, whether at home or in nursing facilities.

Once a long-term care need arises, patients often enter the “medical treadmill.” It’s crucial for families to understand the care trajectory and plan for each step, including hospitalization, home care, and care in rehabilitation or skilled nursing facilities.

Dr. McClanahan will cover:

  • Hiring in-home caregivers
  • Managing in-home care logistics
  • Transitioning to nursing facilities
  • Finding the right facility
  • Ensuring appropriate care

Finally, she will address the logistics of paying for care, including:

  • Filing long-term care claims
  • Applying for state and local benefits
  • Tax planning

This event is CFP-eligible.
