Jan Lewis
CPA
Jan Lewis is a Tax Partner with BMSS Advisors and CPAs in Ridgeland MS. Her responsibilities include income and estate tax planning, research, and compliance for individual and business clients. Her areas of practice include healthcare, oil & gas, construction, real estate, and high net worth individuals. She has taught continuing education classes throughout Mississippi and nationwide to CPAs in the areas of income tax planning, business tax matters, and S Corporation tax matters, and has given presentations on financial literacy, tax reform, and other tax issues to various groups across the country. Jan has authored articles on tax matters for the Tax Adviser publication and has served as a webcast presenter for the AICPA’s Tax Division. She has been interviewed by Fox Business News, NPR, Forbes, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Bankrate, and the Detroit Free Press for her insight on various policy and practice matters affecting taxpayers. She was selected as one of Forbes Top 200 CPAs in America in 2024. Jan is active in the Mississippi Society of CPAs, previously serving as President of the Society, a member of the MSCPA Board of Governors, an officer of the Society’s Central Chapter, and a trustee of the Mississippi Tax Institute. Jan currently is a member of the MSCPA's Long Range Planning Committee and the MSCPA's Young CPAs Liaison Committee. Jan has held many leadership roles within the AICPA throughout her career. She has served as the MSCPA’s elected representative to the AICPA Council, and on the AICPA Life Insurance and Disability Plans Committee. She was a member and chair of the AICPA's Tax Practice and Procedures Committee, and member and chair of the AICPA's Tax Executive Committee, the senior committee overseeing the work of all Tax Division committees and technical resource panels. Jan has served on the AICPA Board of Directors since 2023. She was recently elected as Vice Chair of the AICPA, and in that role, Jan is part of the executive committee that directs the strategic vision of both the AICPA and the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (the Association). As Vice Chair, Jan looks forward to working with the Association to be the global voice of accounting and finance professionals worldwide, while advocating for the profession, the public and her clients. Jan is a native of Jackson, MS, and a 1985 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Mississippi State University. She is a member and past chair of the Adkerson School of Accountancy Advisory Board at MSU and was selected as the MSU College of Business's Alumni Fellow for 2016. She was chosen as MSU Beta Alpha Psi Alumnus of the Year in 2000. Jan and her husband, John, live in Jackson with their spoiled dachshunds, Connie, Rocky and Snoop.
Mark G. Peterson
Executive Vice President - Advocacy, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants
Mark G. Peterson is the Executive Vice President – Advocacy at the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). In this position, he sets the direction for global advocacy for management and public accounting, CPA and CGMA issues. Peterson works closely with state CPA societies, national governments, US state governments, regulators, legislators and accounting bodies to influence and shape policy decisions impacting the profession. Peterson leads the Congressional & Political Affairs, and State Society Affairs, State Regulatory and Legislative Affairs and Tax Advocacy teams. Prior to joining the AICPA, Peterson served as Vice President with the Alpine Group, where he was responsible for individualized lobbying work on tax, trade, agricultural, environmental, energy and related issues. He served a diverse group of clients, including major international technology companies, energy companies, financial institutions, manufacturers and trade associations, as well as worked on several major policy coalitions on matters pending before the legislative and executive branches of government. Peterson has held several other positions in Washington that have included the role of Washington Representative for Toyota Motors North America, Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs for Andersen LLP in Washington and a Special Assistant to Speaker Newt Gingrich in the U.S. House of Representatives. He earned his bachelor of science degree in history from the University of North Dakota.
Melanie Lauridsen
Melanie Lauridsen is the AICPA Vice President of the Tax Policy & Advocacy team in Washington, DC. In this position, she is responsible for the review, formulation, and submission of federal tax technical and policy recommendations to Congress, the Treasury Department, and the Internal Revenue Service. Prior to her current role she also worked on the AICPA Tax Practice & Ethics team determining strategic direction for resources, education, and materials necessary for CPAs to be recognized as the premier providers of tax services. Before working at the AICPA, she also worked at PwC and then Argy, Wiltse and Robinson. She has a Bachelor of Economics from Brigham Young University and a Masters in Accountancy from George Washington University.
Lisa Simpson
CPA, CGMA
Lisa is Vice President — Firm Services for the AICPA. She leads the Private Companies Practice Section (PCPS) team in the development of practice management tools that address topics most important to firm owners. Lisa and her team develop and foster relationships with firms of all sizes, including through the AICPA’s Major Firms Group and Group of 400 initiatives as well as networking groups for small firms. Lisa began her career with EY gaining audit and tax experience in her six years with the firm. She then worked for a small firm in Lexington, Kentucky for five years. Lisa has 20+ years of industry experience as well, having served as the CFO for non-profit and for-profit organizations before joining the AICPA in 2012. Lisa graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and is licensed as a CPA in NC and KY.
