Steven Shill
U.S. National and Global Healthcare Industry Lead Partner and National Leader of BDO’s Center for Healthcare Excellence &Innovation Steven has more than 27 years (nearly 3 decades) of public accounting and consulting experience with two global accounting firms serving a variety of publicly and privately held companies (including nonprofits and NGOs) in the healthcare sector. During this time he also spent a number of years working in private industry in a senior management role with an actuarial and risk management company. Steven’s experience in public accounting over the years has been global. Steven qualified as a Chartered Accountant and worked as a Public Auditor in South Africa for many years prior to joining BDO in the USA. His experience included providing audit and accounting services to various healthcare and social programs operating in Africa including USAID.
Farlen Halikman
CPA, CHFE
Farlen is a healthcare-industry CPA and a Certified Healthcare Fraud Examiner. He is a shareholder at MSL, where he leads a team of colleagues in best-of-class practice of public accounting. Farlen has served on the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) Health Care Expert Panel. He has over 35 years of experience in CPA practice. Farlen is a key member of MSL’s Health Care Practice Group and stays abreast of the complex and rapidly changing Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement regulations. In addition to being a CPA, he has additional certification in Health Care Fraud Examination, Risk Management and Compliance.
Brian Pavona
CPA, FHFMA
As BKD’s Healthcare Industry Leader for Chicago and surrounding areas, Brian is a public accounting executive with more than 17 years of experience providing assurance and advisory services to leading health care organizations, including academic medical centers, multihospital systems, community hospitals, community health centers and other healthcare organizations. He has extensive experience auditing and advising clients on critical allowances and reserves, revenue recognition, grants and contributions, lease accounting, investments, business combinations, conduit and other debt issuances, and joint ventures. Brian also has experience assisting organizations with adopting and complying with the requirements of the Uniform Guidance/Government Auditing Standards (formerly A-133 audits). He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, a member of the Illinois CPA Society, and is a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). Brian is also an officer and Board Member for the First Illinois HFMA Chapter.
